Adding a field to a certificate you already hold

Once you hold a Texas standard certificate, most additional fields are added by passing the content examination for the new field and applying to add it, with no second preparation programme; some fields do require additional preparation, and the state's page for that field is what says which.

What it is for

A certified history teacher was asked in March whether she could take a section of geography in the autumn. She assumed a whole new programme and said no. For most fields the honest answer is one examination and an application, and she had turned down a change she wanted on the strength of a guess.

How to think about it

Go to the state's page for the field you want to add and look for one thing: whether that field can be added by examination alone, or whether preparation is required as well. Then check the grade band, because holding a field in one band does not authorise it in another. Decide against what the page said, not against what you assumed.
