The content examination: proving you know the subject itself

Texas will not certify you in a field until you have demonstrated subject-matter knowledge in that field by examination, and the examination is the content test that matches the exact certification field you applied for, in the state's own examination programme, which Texas calls TExES.

What it is for

Two candidates sat an examination for a field next to the one they wanted, because the names were close and nobody checked. One had to sit again, waited out the retake window, and missed the hiring season for the year. The words on the examination and the words on the certificate have to be the same words, and reading them side by side takes five minutes.

How to think about it

Choose the certification field first, in the state's own wording, and write it down. Then find the content examination whose name carries that same field and that same grade band. Then ask your programme for approval to test, because a Texas candidate registers with the programme's permission rather than on their own.

The trap

Assuming the examination is the qualification. It is one piece of evidence. Passing it certifies nobody: the recommendation and the background check still have to happen, and a pass sitting alone in your file does nothing at all.
