Induction: the years somebody walks beside you

Clearing a California preliminary credential means completing a Commission-approved induction programme, which is job-embedded: you do it while you are employed and teaching, with an assigned mentor and an individual learning plan built around your own practice.

Hone is a place to practise a career, one idea a day. This is one of its lessons, written out in full and free to read without an account.

What it is for

A new teacher heard the word programme and pictured evenings of coursework on top of an already impossible first year. Induction is not a second job. It is structured support inside the one she has: somebody experienced meeting her regularly, a plan written around what she is actually struggling with, and evidence drawn from her own classroom rather than from an assignment.

How to think about it

Ask the district in your first weeks who runs induction and when the intake is, because it is usually run by the district or a county office rather than by the university you trained with. Then treat the individual learning plan as yours: it is the one document in this whole road that is written around your own weaknesses, which makes it the most useful one in it.

Worked example

Preliminary credential in hand, hired, and induction begun in the same year
The clock on the credential is already running.
Assigned mentor and an individual learning plan, built inside the job
Not evening coursework. Structured support around the work you are doing.
Runs for the number of years the Commission publishes, alongside the post
Which is why it starts early and not late.
Induction programme recommends, and the credential is cleared
The recommendation is what closes the preliminary term.

Your turn

Complete the sentence: induction is job-embedded, so you do it while you are what.

The trap

Waiting for somebody to enrol you. Induction is usually run by an employer or a county office and it has intake dates, so a teacher who waits to be told can lose a year off a credential that cannot be renewed.
