The renewal cycle, and the thing California does not ask for

A California clear credential is renewed on a cycle the Commission publishes, through the Commission's own online system, and renewal of a clear teaching credential is an application rather than a count of professional development, which is the clearest place where the two states differ.

Hone is a place to practise a career, one idea a day. This is one of its lessons, written out in full and free to read without an account.

What it is for

A teacher who had trained in Texas and moved west spent a year collecting evidence of professional development for a California renewal that did not ask for it, and a teacher moving the other way assumed her California habits would carry and let a Texas cycle run out. Both had learned one state's renewal and assumed it was how renewal works. It is not; it is how that state works.

How to think about it

Learn the renewal rule of the state you are actually licensed in, and learn it at the start of the term rather than the end. Two questions answer it: what does this state require me to have done by the end of the cycle, and what does it require me to submit. Write both answers down with the date you looked them up, because this is precisely the kind of rule that moves.

Worked example

California: renewed online through the Commission, on the published cycle
An application, made before the term ends.
Texas: a count of professional development across the cycle, then an application
Two different obligations wearing the same word.
The rule of the state I am licensed in, looked up at the start of the term
Not the rule of the state I trained in, and not a colleague's memory of it.
Both answers written down with the date I looked them up
So a rule that has moved can be spotted next time.

Your turn

The trap

Carrying one state's renewal habits across a border. A credential is issued by a state and renewed on that state's terms, and the fact that you did it correctly somewhere else is worth nothing to the board that holds your licence now.
