Supervised student teaching: the hours somebody signs for
Inside the preparation programme is a period of supervised clinical practice in a real classroom, with a supervising teacher from the school and a supervisor from the programme, for a number of hours the programme publishes, records and signs off.
Hone is a place to practise a career, one idea a day. This is one of its lessons, written out in full and free to read without an account.
What it is for
A candidate did far more time in her placement classroom than she needed, because she loved it, and then discovered that only the time logged and signed counted towards the requirement. She had the experience and not the record. The requirement is not about how much you were there; it is about how much was witnessed and written down.
How to think about it
On the first day of the placement, find out who signs your log, how often, and what counts. Then log as you go, weekly, not in a rush at the end when the supervising teacher has thirty other things to do. If your placement is interrupted, say so early: a gap that is known about can be planned around, and a gap discovered at the end cannot.
Worked example
Who signs the log, how often, and what counts, asked on day oneThree questions, five minutes, and they save the whole placement.
Logged weekly as it happens, with the signature at the timeA signature chased in June is a favour; a signature given in October is routine.
Two supervisors: the teacher in the room, and the one from the programmeThey watch different things and both have to be satisfied.
Interruption reported early, so the missing time can be planned back inKnown gaps get fixed. Discovered gaps get you held back.
Your turn
Name what California calls the supervised work in a real classroom inside a programme.
Supervised student teaching is clinical , and the programme records every hour of it

The trap
Volunteering extra time and counting it. Time only counts if it was arranged through the programme, supervised and signed. Generosity with your hours is good for the children and it is not evidence.
