Three doors into a Texas classroom, and only one pays you while you train

Texas certifies teachers who finish an approved preparation programme, and there are three kinds: a university programme taken inside a bachelor's degree, a post-baccalaureate programme taken at a university after a degree, and an alternative certification programme. The certificate at the end is the same one; what differs is when the money starts.

What it is for

A career-changer at thirty-eight with a mortgage does not need to know which route is best. She needs to know which route lets her draw a salary during the training year, because that single fact decides whether she can do this at all. The routes are not ranked. They are priced differently in time and in income, and she gets to choose.

How to think about it

Ask one question of any route before any other: during the classroom year, am I a student in that classroom or am I the teacher of it? A student is unpaid and works beside somebody who holds the class. A teacher of record is paid and holds the class. Everything else about a route follows from that answer.

Worked example

Route one, at university: degree and preparation together, classroom year unpaid
The traditional undergraduate path. You graduate already recommended for a certificate.
Route two, post-baccalaureate: degree finished, preparation added at a university
For somebody who has a degree in something else and wants a university's coursework.
Route three: preparation alongside a paid year as teacher of record
The route built for career-changers. A district hires you and a programme trains you at the same time.
All three routes finish at the same standard certificate

The trap

Believing a route is a level of quality. It is not. A standard certificate says the field and the grades, never the programme, and the state holds all three kinds of programme to the same standards and publishes how each one performed.
