The standard certificate, and the clock it starts

When the recommendation, the examinations, the background check and the application have all landed, the state issues a standard certificate naming a field and a grade band; it is valid for a term the state publishes and it has to be renewed at the end of that term.

What it is for

A teacher five years into a good career opened an email telling her that her certificate had lapsed. She had never registered that the document had an end date, because at the moment it arrived she was thinking about a beginning. A certificate is a licence with a clock on it, and the clock started on the day she was so pleased to have it.

How to think about it

On the day it is issued, read two things off it and write them somewhere you will still be able to find in several years: exactly what it authorises, and the date the term ends. Then set a reminder well before that date, because renewal has work inside it and the work does not fit in the last week.
