The approved preparation programme, and what is inside it
A California credential requires completion of a preparation programme that the Commission has approved, and that one programme carries the pedagogy coursework, the fieldwork and supervised student teaching, the teaching performance assessment, and the health, CPR and Constitution requirements.

What it is for
A candidate compared four programmes on price and length alone and chose the shortest. In the second term she found that its placement was a commute away, that its teaching performance assessment support was a single workshop, and that it did not carry the Constitution requirement, which she then had to go and satisfy on her own. Length is not the comparison. Contents are.
How to think about it
Before enrolling anywhere, make a list of what has to end up satisfied and ask each programme which items it carries and which it leaves to you. Then ask how the placement is found and who supervises it. A programme that carries more of the list is doing work you would otherwise do yourself in the hardest year you will have.

The trap
Enrolling in something that teaches the same material but has no Commission approval. The coursework may be excellent and it cannot put you forward, and there is no appeal on this point: approval is what the Commission checks first.
